Harry Aloysius AUSTIN- seeking information.........
« on: Wednesday 18 October 17 04:21 BST (UK) »
Harry Aloysius AUSTIN of Sydney, Wool Merchant was named as a friend in the will of my ancestor, John Hammond GALBRAITH who died in London in 1921, at the age of 59 years. The will was executed in 1920.

That is all I have about Harry (or was he Henry?) Austin. I am hoping someone can find provide a detail or two.

Lots of mentions on TROVE.  I searched using "Harry Austin wool merchant"

This obit has information about his work.    Died in July 1919.
http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/159656616

Search using "Harry Austin" also gets good results.  EG another obit - this one mentions his family:
http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/239645762

Edit to add:
The death I have shown occurred in 1919 and the date of your ancestor's death was 1920.  Henry AUSTIN's son was "Harry AUSTIN" who was also in the wool trade so perhaps your ancestor was a friend of the son rather than the father I found.  Will dig a bit more!

Hi Judith,

Thank you... :)

Yes, I think it could be the son we are after. The will was executed in 1920, the death occurred in 1921.

There are a couple of very odd on-line family trees which are supposed to be about the family.  Some of them have Henry AUSTIN living in London in 1901 with his occupation given as plasterer!   ::)  ::)

Following up on a mention in one of the Obits Judith found ....

From the Obit  http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/159656616
his son, Mr Harry Austin, who today holds the responsible position of ‘controlling appraiser’ under the wool acquisition scheme in Sydney, as well as being a member of the NSW State Wool Committee….

Sands 1920 Directory
NSW State Wool Committee, 7 Bent St
NSW State Wool Committee (Accountant’s Depot) 70 O’Connell St

Those addresses are within a short walk of each other

I have not found Harry Aloysius AUSTIN on my early NSW electoral rolls.  It was not compulsory to enrol until into the 1920s.

Hi JM & Sue,

Thank you for your contributions and putting some "flesh on bones". I am interested in the friends cultivated by my ancestor so this makes for interesting reading.

Your help is appreciated.
