richard james balaam
« on: Wednesday 18 October 17 10:02 BST (UK) »
Richard James Balaam married Hester Holland in 1891 but left her  about 3 years later. In 1911 he was living with Rhoda Coppins they were using the surname Balham and he named himself Frederick. He died in 1912. Rhoda registered his death as Richard Balaam, and as the informant, herself as Rhoda Balaam. The address given for the deceased was the same as that for Fred. Balham in the 1911 census.
if anybody knows anything else about Richard I would be interested to hear.

Thanks for those replies. I did have that information.
In the 1891 census, Richard states his birthplace as Melbourne. Completely untrue. Heather gives her birthplace as Dunstable Untrue, although her father managed a pub. there.
In the 1901 census, Hester gives her surname as Grieg, spinster. In fact, she had a child,  Vera, by John Arthur Greig at that time Vera was living with her grandfather, William Reuben Holland. In 1903 she, Hester, married Walter Benjamin Groves, describing herself as Hester Greig, fomerly Holland. Widow.

In the 1891 census, Richard states his birthplace as Melbourne. Completely untrue

I'd spotted him in 1881, 1901 and 1911 - hence the ! re. the 1891 details. Seems a bit of a jack the lad.
