Hi

John was dead by the 1841 Census as his widow Sarah is shown in London with her children. I wonder if he died at sea. The problem I have is that there are 2 John Biddle's 1. born in Wootton under Edge, same parents as Richard Biddle and another John born 1805 in Bristol parents John and Patience so all though the connection with Richard and John's widow Sarah would indicate him All records seem to indicate that John was from Bristol ?

Kind Regards

David  ;)

A "John Biddle, Commander" made a number of sailings in "the China". The last sighting I can see is

Shipping and Mercantile Gazette, 17 Sep 1839
"For sale, freight or charter - The fine, new A1 eleven years, British built ship CHINA, Captain Biddle, Commander, 658 tons (N.M), is just arrived from Calcutta...."

Yet to find a sailing for a John Biddle, Commander after that date (at least until a Commander Biddle of the US navy appears in 1847). But still checking.

The 1830 sailing referred to in a previous post of a Commander Biddle, from Cardiff would make the John, baptised 1805 to John and Patience in 1805, quite young to be master? (although baptism doesn't pinpoint date of birth in lots of instances).

Agreed - strong Bristol links.

Hi Hanes

I think you also make a strong point about a Commander at 25. How far is Wootton from Bristol as I feel the link between Richard and widow Sarah with the Swinhoe's is an indication also Sarah's first marriahe was to a Major in the Indian Army so the links there seem strong, would you agree ?

Many thanks

David :D

The Wotton under Edge John (1797?) was born to a Thomas Biddle. The Bristol John (1805) was born to a John Biddle.
Naming patterns can be a factor in determining parents but, unfortunately, John and Sarah named the boys John and Thomas. But the Thomas is interesting.

It's the Swinhoe, Calcutta link from the '41 Census (with Sarah) and '51 (with Richard) that stands out.

Biddle sailings - latest sightings -

Shipping and Mercantile Gazette

3 Oct 1839
CUSTOM HOUSE
Docks, London
Hauled in (Oct 2)
China, Biddle, to load

21 Oct 1839
CUSTOM HOUSE
Outwards (Oct 19)
China, Biddle, for Sydney

So, what happened to the China? Unfortunately, not an easy name to chase in newspapers.

Hi Hanes

many thanks for all the hard work you have done for me. I am trying to help a friend whose wife was Mary Biddle prove a family link to the John Biddle who was the founder of the Unitarian religious movement at the time of Oliver Cromwell.
Where do you think I can find the marriage of Thomas Biddle and Ann c1794 ?

Kind Regards

David :D

Gloucester Journal, 23 Feb 1807

"All Persons having any Demands of Thomas Biddle, late of Wotton-under-Edge, in the County of Gloucester, Attorney-at-Law, deceased are requested to deliver in Accounts thereof, either to Mr Richard Cooper, of Tetbury, in the same County ....."

Search this site for a Thomas Biddle, marriage year 1791, and cross check with the above article.

Hi Hanes

Thanks for that information, Richard must have been either his father in law or bother in law. I found Thomas's birth in 1768 in Wootton son of Matthew Biddle and Mary Hick who married in Stinchcombe in 1759, Matthew being from Wootton, but I cannot find a birth c1736 for Matthew although there is another Marrhew and Sarah having children at that time. Can you help.

Kind Regards

David ;)
