Peter Tait B 1805c shetland
« on: Thursday 19 October 17 16:05 BST (UK) »
I am looking for information on Peter Tait who married Ursula Tulloch on November 14th 1833, I cant seem to find him on any of the census.  Ursula moved to Glasgow with her children. Ursula died in 1884, her youngest son was born in 1856.  I believe a lot of men in Shetland went to sea or to work for the Hudson Bay Company.  I wonder if anyone can tell me if there are any records I can look up.

Hi , welcome to RC  :)

Could that be Peter Tait age 55(with 3 sisters) and son(?) Robert age 16 at 29 Grove Street Glasgow on the 1851 Census(FreeCEN) ?

I found that , then found this tree with the same information -
https://www.bayanne.info/Shetland/getperson.php?personID=I65548&tree=ID1

Don't know if any of that is correct  :-\

Several 'hits' for a Peter Tait on these Merchant Navy records on Ancestry.
Sorry, I don't have an Ancestry sub, so couldn't look at the dates and places.
They are viewable on Ancestry at many local libraries - for free.
I have found some of my people who lived on Shetland were 'signed up' - and they were also crofters and fishermen. Did whatever they could to make a living is my guess!  :)

This is the Canadian website for Hudson's Bay.

I see there is a 'Name Indexes' page.

Also page at UK National Archives

Shetland was badly affected by the "Famine" of the 1840's which fits the move to Glasgow.

I found found the following on Ursula Tulloch with Peter born i 1790''s:

https://bayanne.info/Shetland/getperson.php?personID=I65546&tree=ID1

It shows a Peter Tait b.1795 in Nesting, Shetland as her husband. Suggest you go to this site as it gives his and her parents, plus their children, some census information and info on their death dates.
