Simnel Street Southampton in the 1871 Census & Pepper St.today ?
« on: Thursday 19 October 17 18:47 BST (UK) »
Hi there
My first time on a Hampshire board!

Going round in circles trying to find Simnel Street Southampton in the 1871 Census.
Can anyone work out the reference number for me please ?
Not sure what number...probably no.2....just send me to the street!

In 1861 it was a licensed lodging house and looking at Google Street View, it would seem today that it is a pub called the Titanic (ominous)....

And I also have a reference to a Pepper Street in 1863 and have no idea where that was or is today.

Grateful for any pointers
Thanks
Rebel

There is no reference to a Pepper Street in 1871, but there is a Pepper Alley, RG 10 / 1194 / 59 / 27

Pepper Alley it must be...
Many thanks for that useful link, very helpful.

Do you have any idea where Pepper Alley would have been? Google Maps only finds a Peppercorn Way which I hardly think is the same thing.
I've had a look at the 1870 Map on the Southampton Council site but can't find it...pprobably  because I've got no real idea where to look!

Thankyou for that....I enjoyed the read , the article really makes the street come alive.
Hard to imagine how much poverty there was....I thought London was bad but Southampton obviously had problems of its own.
many thanks
