Duffield family (Ballymagarry, Shankill) (18th Century - present)
« on: Thursday 19 October 17 23:14 BST (UK) »
I am looking for descendants  of  Samuel Duffield and Jane Girvan who married in 1714. Two brothers, George (1797-1878) and Samuel Duffield (1802-77) both  lived and had farms in the townland of Ballymagarry,  Parish of Shankill  (near Belfast).  Samuel and Jane  were from the Templepatrick / Carnmoney area, and Ballymagarry is approximately 2 miles from there.

It's very difficult to prove a link, though if anyone else is researching the Duffield's, I'd be happy to chat with you.

Thanks for your reply, and also all the details regarding the Duffield family members.  From the limited sources which are available in the eighteenth century, and from Wills, Street Directories etc from the nineteenth  century, I am fairly sure that the individuals recorded in the 1901 and 1911 Censuses, and prior to that, in Griffth's Valuation, are direct descendants of Samuel Duffield and Jane Girvan.

Thank you once again for your assistance, it was most appreciated.

Not related nor researching, but here are a few more Duffield references that track back to the 'gap' period in the 18th C...

From the Belfast News-Letter of Friday 17 August 1832:
On Saturday last, in the 60th year of her age, JANE, relict of the late Mr. Samuel Duffield, of Belfast.

From the Belfast News-Letter of Tuesday 4 September 1832:
TO LET, that Old Established CONCERN, No. 172, NORTH-STREET, lately occupied by the late Mrs. Duffield, and which has been used as an Inn for the last 50 years.  To any person wishing to commence the above Business [etc. etc. etc.] Apply on the Premises to MR. SAMUEL DUFFIELD.

From Clifton Street graveyard inscriptions:
Erected to the memory of Samuel Duffield, of Belfast, who departed this life the 16th of Dec 1821 aged [5]2 years Also 5 of his children: viz, Hugh, died 31st May 1814 aged 19 years, Jane 1st May 1820 aged 15 years, David, Wm John, and Hugh died when infants Also Margt BIGGAR aged 88 years Also his wife Jane Duffield who departed this life on the 11th day of August 1832 aged 60 years.

Also, the Clifton Street gravestone inscription for Samuel Duffield of Summer Hill, Dunmurry who died aged 75 on 20 December 1877 mentions his sister Margaret who died 1st February 1878 aged 78 years.

So, looks like there was a Samuel Duffield and Jane born 1769/72, who married I'm guessing c. 1790.

A few more references...

From a directory of businesses in Belfast 1808:
- Duffield, James & Robert, Coal Factors, 38 Prince's Street
- Duffield, Samuel, Carmen's Inn Keeper, 118 North Street

The Belfast Almanack and Directory of 1820 lists a Samuel Duffield, a Grocer, of 166 North Street, also a Samuel Duffield Sen, a livery stables and Innkeeper of 154 North Street.

There is a PRONI reference T554 entitled 'McQuiston and Duffield family papers' (1774-1832) - Genealogical and testamentary papers relating to the McQuiston family, Lambeg, and Jane Duffield, Belfast, Co. Antrim and others. Also reference T554/8 - 22 December 1832 - Copy Will & Codicil Jane Duffield, North St., Belfast, Proved. Also reference D207/15/21 entitled 'Award involving executors of Jn Duffield' (2 May 1708):  Award involving executors of Jn Duffield, and Wm Shaw and Wm Stewart, and compensation arising out of removal of house and loss of land by erection of bridge at Sixmilewater, Antrim.

Also, from 'Tenants on the Upton Estate, Templepatrick, County Antrim, 1768-1769': Duffield, Samuel, 1769, Templepatrick townland, Templepatrick parish.

Thank you BallyaltililliganG and Gaffy for all your fantastic information on the Duffield's.  I have viewed the  Will of Jane Duffield  in 1832, in which she mentions her sons:  George,  Samuel, William John and Alexander. Her late husband, was Samuel Duffield who died in 1821. He was a Grocer, and also a 'Special Constable' in 1812. Jane, also mentions her brother, Alexander Roney (so now we know her maiden name).

She must not have been on good terms with her son, George (b: 1797), as she only leaves him £1, whereas, Samuel (b: 1802) received £600, plus a farm at Shankill.

I found an article in the Belfast Newsletter in 1770, placed by Margaret Duffield, of Templepatrick,
which was an advertisement seeking the Creditors and Debtors of her late husband,  Samuel. She intended to move to her farm at Shankill.  This would appear to be the parents of Samuel (1769-1821) who lived in North Street. I am fairly sure that the Samuel Duffield who died in 1769/70 was a son of the Samuel Duffield and Jane Girvan who married at Carnmoney Presbyterian Meeting House in 1714.

The locations  of:  Carnmoney / Shankill / North Street, Belfast are all within a relatively short distance of each other, so it seems that we have solved this puzzle between us. I am indebted to both BallyaltikilliaganG and also Gaffy for your assistance, so once again, thank you very much.

Could you please tell me where you found the marriage of George Duffield to Sarah Coates and also with regard to the Samuel Duffield who was an Innkeeper in 1808. Does the street directory exist, and if so, where is it located?
