Are you able to identify the uniform. No writing on the back but was taken at T. Johnstone, 71 Brandon Street, Motherwell

C. WW1 army uniform. He's a signaller. Could be New Zealand RE but not 100%.

The cap badge and collar insignia look like the 1st (Canterbury) Company of the Canterbury Infantry Regiment.

I'm not aware of any family from Scotland having gone to NZ.  Was it normal to go out there to sign up. Would they have come to Scotland during the war & that's how the photograph got taken?

ANZAC's were in the UK waiting to go overseas. They would have received additional combat training while in the UK to prepare them for trench warfare.
It may be he was billeted with the family.
