A young man from Glencroe, Arrochar, Argyll
« on: Friday 20 October 17 19:37 BST (UK) »
Hi, I have been researching my GG Grandfather Alexander Macarthur for the last 3 years  :o  I know that he left Argyll and came to Sligo, Ireland in the 1850's where he opened a bakery/provisions suppliers in the town which remained open for almost a century.
Going by the dates on the Irish Census he was born 1833/34
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Sligo/Sligo_West_Urban/O_Connell_Street/770661/
I have searched on Scotland's People and come up with a birth record on the OPR for Glenorchy and Inishail for 19th April 1933 which could be a match - with father Peter McArthur and mother Anne Morrison, and the census return from 1841 of Peter and Anne and their young family.  I can't be sure and would really appreciate any pointers

Hi

Were any of their children named Peter or Ann?

Also, I see his wife was b. Scotland - do you know her maiden name and marriage date/place?

Hi again  :)

Have you looked at other births in Argyll?  There are more in the age range -  you could search on  Family Search

For example ~

Hi Gadget,
Thanks for your reply  :D  Jane Bell and Alexander Macarthur married 6th Sept 1865.  Jane was born Kilmaddock, Perthshire c. 1844.  They had two boys, Peter and James.  Peter took over the family business and I am his descendant.  James became a VET and emigrated to England to live in Bedfordshire, Leyton Buzzard (1 Market Square).  I have been trying to trace James family as none of my family knew of him at all until we started researching  :-\ ???  He was even awarded an MBE....

The Peter looks promising, given his son's name.  Have you got the marriage certificate of Alexander and Jane? If so what does it give for his father?

It's a while since I've looked but yes I do have the marriage cert and his father was Peter, a Topsman.

I see that son Peter was the informant on Alexander's death - 4 Sept 1913 from haematuria, aged 79.

I was looking to see if marriage cert image was up on irishgenealogy.ie but it's not there yet - just the index.
