This is the Ann Macarthur I settle on when I started researching...
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYZS-HJD
Her mother's name being Mary would fit with Alexander and Ann's second child.
But the birth date of Dec 1976 would make her 44 at 1841 census.

The 1841 census usually recorded ages in 5 year age bands for those 15 and over - so 40-44 = 40.  Also, people's ages  on the census are not always accurate - it was whatever the person completing the census said it was.

Also, as I think I said earlier, baptisms, marriages (banns)  and burials were not all recorded in the parish records  - see

https://www.gla.ac.uk/schools/socialpolitical/research/economicsocialhistory/historymedicine/scottishwayofbirthanddeath/

You'll have to try and find Ann/Nancy/Agnes's death  post 1861 to hopefully find her parents' names.

Have you got details of her children's marriages?  Following them might indicated when she died.

Did you see that I found a probable for  her on the Valuation Rolls in South Tullich, Inveraray in 1855.

Once I'd located her with Dugald and Una on the 1871, it took me only a couple of minutes and a few credits to find her death on SP.

Agnes Mcarthur, widow of Peter McArthur, shepherd, died on 23 Aprl 1879 at Dugald and Una's home in Old Kilpatrick.

Her death cert shows her as being 85 yrs old. Her parents were Alexander Morrison, farmer and Mary MS Campbell, both deceased. Dugald, her son, was informant.

Added - note that she went by Anne, Ann, Agnes and Nancy

Sorry that should have been Peter & Ann in my last post  ::)
I have traced Alexander's brother Dugald McArthur and his family quite a bit...he was a Bridge Keeper at Hungryside Bridge, Cadder.  They had at least 3 children, Isabella, Agnes & Peter.  He also left a Will but no mention of his mother.
And from memory I traced John to England but don't seem to have any paperwork on this  ???

I did see your information on widow A. McArthur at Tullich South thank you, I will do a bit of research on the Estate.
I haven't looked much at death certificates so this is an area that I will look at further for sure.
Thank you so much for your help here.
I've just seen your most recent post....I should have been quicker replying but that is great thank you again!!

I then tried to link Mary Campbell to the family of Peter Campbell and Isobel Ferguson of Auchindrain as it has been suggested anecdotally that they may have had a daughter Mary but there isn't a record as far as I know!
