James Martin Hillhouse Taylor Born Poole
« on: Saturday 21 October 17 22:12 BST (UK) »
James emigrated to Australia in 1841. On the ships log he is named as James Taylor.
He sailed on the Victoria in Oct 1841 (this ship was for the private use of the Hillhouse/Hilhouse company)
He states his mother as Jane.
We think his grandfather was James Martin Hillhouse/Hilhouse as
In James Martin Hillhouse/Hilhouse will approx 1822/23  it states bequests to the 3 lawful sons of my deceased son Robert
Robert. James,  and George Poole
Robert senior died in 1821
There is a burial in Clifton Gloucester of a Jane Pool in 1819
Could this be James mother?
What happened to James, George and Robert afterwards
We’re they put with relatives?
Name of Taylor? Is that why he calls himself Taylor?
Did he use his grandfathers name when he arrived in Australia.
Would there be any school registers around 1825 naming these boys?
Any ideas please
Many thanks

Not solving your questions but.....Unless there's another part of the lengthy will I didn't spot, it doesn't refer to the 3 POOLE sons of the late Robert HILHOUSE as 'lawful' - rather, it clearly refers to their illegitimacy:

"...And shall pay and apply a sum not exceeding the yearly sum of one hundred pounds to and for the maintenance, education and advancement of Robert Pool, George Pool and James Pool, three natural children of my late son Robert deceased..."

Cheers

James TAYLOR sailed on the Victoria in October 1841 - from where?  -  could possibly be on the 1841 census, taken 6 June 1841)  ? what occupation was he in Australia + what names did he give his children i.e. family names.

From other information on the 'net' - it states James was born c1814.

Looking at the Gloucestershire Baptism Index CD after 1813 - the surname TAYLOR was sometimes spelt TAYLER  - 81 in total

Baptism at Wareham Dorset - 29 December 1816

James TAYLER, parents: Edward & Jane

I have found 2 James Taylor in the 1841 census in Bristol
About the right age
1 a surveyor and 1 a merchant
He sailed in the October 1841 from Bristol
His children were called Taylor a Jane and a Robert
He called himself James Martin Hillhouse Taylor.
He was lined up for a job as an agent in a shipping company in Morpeth.
I cannot find any baptisms that state mother only (Jane) though
Thank you
I would love to know if the Jane Pool who died in Clifton had an age.

In Mary’s Will she bequeaths £10 each to her other grand children but they are not named unfortunately. 2 grand children are mentioned but not any of the Pool children.
There is nothing about them in George’s will either.
This is really a mystery.
The only way to find anything out I feel is to have more information on the Jane Pools death in 1819
And any school records.
Thanks everyone for your input
