Thank you so now narrowed down to having died between 1920 and January 1925 as have just found that he was deceased when his daughter Mary got married, thank you so much for pointing me in the right direction.

There's a possible death in Aberdeen St Nicholas in 1921 who looks about the right age:

Alexander Thomson, aged 51 (ref 168/1 994)
