John Ruskin, Rose Terrace
« on: Sunday 22 October 17 13:28 BST (UK) »
There is a plaque on the wall of 10, Rose Terrace, Perth stating that John Ruskin (1819-1900), the Victorian author and art critic, first husband of Effie Gray of Bowerswell, spent part of his childhood here (with his Aunt Jessie).
Does anyone know Jessie's married and maiden names?

Many thanks for the links Eve.
As soon as I saw the name Richardson I went into the pre-1855 MIs for Greyfriars.
There are 15 MIs for the Richardson name but the one I was looking for is;

Block D: 19: (on top) 234: mr Patk Richardson 20.7.1824 50, wife Janet Ruskin, 18.5.1828 43, chn Margaret 9.1.1817 6m, Cath 4, Patk 8.1.1818 8, Helen 11.2.1823 3w, James Tweedale R., 21.3.1828 8, Janet 8: (west side) 696: Jas R. brewer here 4.1.1877 1777 56, wife Mary Grant 7.11.1811 68: (Note by Sievewright - Janet Ruskin was aunt of John R. who lived with his aunt for some time at their house, the first to the north of the new UP church, Main Street, Bridgend: DNB does not mention Ruskin's Perth connection).

That's a lot of bairns dying young also must be a wrong date re James Richardson and wife Mary Grant.
I knew that aunt Jessie had lived in Bridgend and I believe there was a plaque on the building until it was demolished.
Strange that Sievewright doesn't mention Rose Terrace.

Thanks Annie that makes sense.
I thought Pitfour was an estate near St Madoes betwixt Perth & Dundee.
The Richardson's of Pitfour owned a lot of fishing rights on the river Tay.
That link says it's in Aberdeenshire.
Also I don't see any connection to Patrick Richardson who married Janet Ruskin.
Yet James Richardson is on the same headstone

Wikipedia
Pitfour Castle is an 18th-century country house situated on the southeast edge of the village of St Madoes in the Carse of Gowrie, Perthshire, Scotland. The present Pitfour Castle was built for John Richardson (1760-1821), a wealthy local man involved with the salmon fisheries of the Tay, around 1784.

I can't see a link either but they must be related?

Wikipedia is one of the best sites for facts!

The Peerage is not the best site for facts! They are very lax with info. a lot of the time for whatever reason & it's not an official government site as some people think.

That's a good link Annie but it throws up more questions.
Presumably the Richardson family were living in Bridgend when Patrick dies in 1824.
Is Jessie (Ruskin) Richardson living in no.10, Rose Terrace as a widow and dying there in 1828?

I'm no really concerned with the genealogy of the Richardson and Ruskin names.
I'm trying to write wee booklets on Bowerswell and Rose Terrace and some of the info overlaps.

If Patrick died across the Tay at Bridgend would he not have been buried on that side of the Tay?

If Jessie died facing the 'Inch' at Rose Terrace she should be buried at Greyfriars but there's no' records online to check either so?

Buckhyne, what inspired you to write these wee booklets (interesting), you havin a 'lang spoon' & no a Perthonian  ??? ;D  ;D
