Help with Pennsylvania Marriage and Births
« on: Sunday 22 October 17 21:17 BST (UK) »
I have the following information of the 1850 US Federal Census of Wolfcreek, Mercer County, Pennsylvania:
Daniel Heater aged 31 born Pennsylvania
Margaret Heater aged 31 born Ireland
John Heater aged 10  born Pennsylvania
Joseph Heater aged 9  born Pennsylvania
Uriah Heater aged 7  born Pennsylvania
Rebecca Heater aged 6  born Pennsylvania
Robert Heater aged 4  born Pennsylvania

How do I find Margaret's maiden name; I presume it will be included on her marriage record to Daniel and possibly on the  birth registration of their children

Regards

Hi

Welcome to RootsChat

Statewide registration of births/deaths in Pennsylvania  did not begin until 1906 so birth records for the children may not exist. It would probably mean searching church records in the county they were born.
Noticed an anc tree which gave the spelling as Heeter rather than Heater.
Presume you have more than the 1850 census  ??? Have you tried to come forward with the family, particularly the children ?

Hi Sandra,
Many thanks for your reply and the Welcome to Rootschat.
I believe the spelling of Heeter and Heater are frequently interchanged and transcriptions often have other spelling variations!! I have used the spelling Heater in this message as that is the way it is spelt in the 1850 US Federal Census.(according to my eyes)

I have the Joseph Heater aged 9 in the 1850 US federal Census in the following censuses ; with his wifeLucy:
  the 1880 US Federal Census in (aged 39) DeKalb county Indiana;
the 1885 Nebraska State Census (aged45) in Harlan County, Nebraska
the 1900 (aged59) and 1910 (aged 69) censuses in Wyandotte County, Kansas

I have not (as yet) been able to identify Joseph Heater in either the 1860 or the 1870 US federal  censuses
I have also not (as yet) been able to identify Daniel Heater and his wife Margaret in any census other than the 1850 census.

In your kind reply you stated that state registration of births in Pennsylvania did not commence until 1906 and suggested the way forward would involve searching through church records. Are these available on line as I live  long way from Pennsylvania?

When did statewide registration of marriages commence? and would I need to look to church records to find the marriage of Daniel Heater to his wife Margaret?

Thanks for your help
Regards
