Early/Donnelly
« on: Monday 23 October 17 11:15 BST (UK) »
Hi, My 2x great grandparents came to Tasmania, Australia on the Flora McDonald in 1855 with their children Margaret, Thomas and Catherine. I know very little about John Early he was born about 1821 in Cavan and he was Roman Catholic, a farm labourer and could not read or write. Mary Ann's maiden name was Donnelly, she was b abt 1831 R C and could read. John her brother was born 1822 and married Catherine Brown b 1823 both convicts to Tasmania in 1846 aboard the Tory and Arabian. John sponsored his sister Mary Ann and her family to Tasmania. Their parents were John and Catherine Brown and her mother we think came to Tasmania with John and Catherine Jr's son James. John Donnelly also had another brother James b 1823/33 that we have  no idea about, we thought he too might have come to Tasmania but cannot find anything at all to prove it. We don't know if there are any more siblings apart from these 3. We don't know what part of Cavan they were from either.
Is there any way to find them in Ireland? We have information from their time in Tasmania but we are having problems finding where to look in Ireland.

All you can really do is go through RC registers Parish by Parish...

https://registers.nli.ie/

Click on Map, then Cavan.
Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.

Thank you so much Heywood.
At least we now have a parish, which is more than we had before. Could you tell me how you searched without knowing what parish it was please so we can continue looking?

The subscription sites are indexed so you can then check on the Catholic parishes site.

I couldn’t the other children and as the marriage is in the same parish, you would think they would be there. You could try searching through - hard work with the quality of the records.

Saw your query re the Donnellys from Cavan. John and Catherine are my gg grandparents too and I have been working on them for about 10 years now. I even wrote a book on them in 2006. I still have plenty of queries on them. I did manage to track down Mary Ann's wedding to John Early in Ireland and also the baptism of their child child Catherine. I have loads of information on John and Mary Ann in Tasmania. I have never been able to find what happened to James. I assume that John and Catherine lived close to Cavan Town on the basis of the location of the parish for their wedding and the baptism of Catherine. More than happy to have more discussion on this.
