Sydney Morning Herald and The Age - Ancestry
« on: Monday 23 October 17 11:34 BST (UK) »
Hi
I noticed the other day that Ancestry has

"Australia, Newspaper Vital Notices, 1841-2001"

With a bit of a fiddle you can access the SMH and the Age. The SMH goes up to Feb 2002.  I have found that the  Notices are not all indexed, however if you know the date of the newspaper you are after, ( by using Ryerson ) you can find the notice .

Just like the old days, when you visited the library and put the microfilm in the reader and rolled thru the various issues of the newspaper until you found the date you where after and then looked for the  Death / Funeral Notices.

Regards

Cass

You don’t need an Ancestry subscription for The Age. It’s free here:

The link does not bring up all issues of the Age.  I've found that many are missing.

The most frustrating thing about the google newspapers is that Saturday issues are often missing & they are the ones I am usually looking for. I've also found the later issues  in Ancestry often have  missing issues.  Sometimes  there is still the necessity to get out of the house & visit a state library  ;D  ;D

People living outside of Australia cannot get a NLA library card, other than when visiting the NLA , whereas they can access google news (free) and ancestry (pay). The SMH information at the NLA only goes to 1995.  It is also available through the NSW State Library for NSW residents for the same time period.

For more recent death/funeral notices - c. 2011 onwards, although some may be there for earlier years
SMH - http://tributes.smh.com.au/obituaries/smh-au/

The Age - http://tributes.theage.com.au/obituaries/theage-au/

Lots of other Oz papers incl Herald-Sun, Advertiser, Courier Mail

The NSW State Library have available  via their eResources  the SMH from 2006 to the current issue,  provided you have a readers card.

The National Library of Australia also has
" Complete digital editions of The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age newspapers. Coverage from 2006 to date. " again provided you have a readers card.

Hi Westward,

May I ask if you read through the live links I provided in my reply before you replied at # 5   I ask this because the live links I posted err ...  :) take you to the following  :)

:) https://www.nla.gov.au/getalibrarycard/registration  the page to apply for their card ... well err that page  displays the following words : To be eligible for a standard library card you must live in Australia and supply an Australian residential address.
International visitors may apply for a temporary onsite library card when visiting the National Library in person.

:) and also the live link : https://www.nla.gov.au/app/eresources/
and then to
https://www.nla.gov.au/app/eresources/browse/153
which in respect of NSW newspapers includes live links as under :
https://www.nla.gov.au/app/eresources/item/3101  SMH 1955-1995
and
https://www.nla.gov.au/app/eresources/item/4616  from 2006 with the following extract from their message inside the ‘red’ box  Access to this resource is restricted to National Library of Australia registered users and/or users located in the NLA building. If you have a library card, try logging in.

I apologise to Cass T for duplicating some of the info she has also posted on this thread.
