Western Cemetery, Perth Road, Dundee
« on: Monday 23 October 17 12:12 BST (UK) »
I believe an Alexander Ingram who died on 29th March 1870 is buried in the Western Cemetery.

I am paying a visit to the area at the end of this week and would like to locate the grave stone.

Could anyone familiar with the layout of this cemetery advise me if there is a plan of the grave stones .  I am looking for lair 137 in V111.

Any help with this would be much appreciated.
Betty

Hi Betty,

I assume that you have a plan of the Cemetery already. These are quite useful in locating the section but not the lair. It can be difficult to locate the actual grave as they are not always numbered.

I visited Balgay Cemetery last week (which is not far from Western Cemetery) and could not find the actual grave. However there is an office at the main entrance to Balgay and the lad in charge - Grant Orrock - was extremely helpful and found it for us.

It may be worth calling in to speak to him as I think he has grave location plans for other cemeteries.

Good Luck.

Thanks for replying.  I do not have a plan of the cemetery. I got the lair number several years ago from the lairs register.  I have not been able to visit the area before.

Hopefully there is an office at the cemetery and someone who can pont us in the right direction.

I must point out that the section should read V11 not V111 as I previously put.

Thanks Betty

Hi Betty,

You can download a plan of the cemetery at  www.dundeecity.gov.uk/environment/cemeterymaps

I don't know if there is an office at Western Cemetery but as I suggested you could always check with the gentleman at Balgay office.

Brilliant.  Thanks for that.  With the plan we should be able to find V11 hopefully I will be okay.  We will check it out on our first day and if we can't find it we will have time to find someone who can help.

Thanks for your time.

Enjoy your visit to Dundee and I hope you find the grave you are looking for.

If you have time the Verdant Works is really worth visiting. An old jute mill now a museum.

Please let us know how your visit goes and if you manage to locate the grave you are looking for.

My late father was from Dundee but settled in Edinburgh after WW2 but I still have fond memories of holidays there with my grandparents and other family.

Our trip to Dundee was very enjoyable. Partly successful in as much as we found the grave stone, eventually.  Our first visit to the cemetery  was unsuccessful but we had another go before we headed for home and found the stone.  I have no idea how the numbering works but at least the map gave us an idea of which section to look.

Thanks again for your help.
