The Mention in Despatches was published in the London Gazette on 22 May 1917 and was from Sir Douglas Haig's Despatch dated 9 April 1917.

The MM was published on 28 July 1917.  In both cases it has to be said, rather brutally, that each entry was one of two very long lists indeed of brave men and there is no detail of the incident(s) that gave rise to the award.  Some 115000 MMs were awarded and no list exists of the citations.

It may be possible to find reference to something in the battalion war diary, more work needed there.

You might like to download the war diary (for £3.50) at http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C7353391

The engagements on 20 and 21 October 1916 during the Battle of the Ancre Heights https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_the_Ancre_Heights
are written up in particular detail and, given the time it takes for recommendations to find their way up the chain of command, that may well have been when one or other of the relevant occurrences took place.

It's not a problem, I have to go through it for myself anyway so no bother to look out for another name as well :-)
