RAF - Abbreviations help on detailed document
« on: Monday 23 October 17 16:49 BST (UK) »
I have this record of my great-great uncle during WWI where he was killed in action, fighting in the RAF. I am struggling to understand what all the abbreviations mean and I was wondering if anybody could help! Much appreciated.

Roderick Maclean was a Lieutenant with 29th Squadron.

you'll find some in this useful site:-

http://www.airhistory.org.uk/rfc/abbreviations.html

SE 5 was an aircraft model - 'Scout Experimental 5' - see here:-

This will; tell you in outline how he died
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No._29_Squadron_RAF

If you choose the dates tht are relevant, you can construct his service in France (the BEF) from 7 September 1918:

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,

I believe that you'll find that the following fit for the RAF in that era

TS   = Training Squadron
TDS = Training Depot Station
School of Air Fighting
Auxiliary School
BEF  = British Expeditionary Forces (ie British forces in France/Flanders)

ASD might be Armament Supply Depot (possibly a temporary posting while convalescing)
