James Pickles
« on: Tuesday 24 October 17 16:12 BST (UK) »
On FindMyPast I found a newspaper article dated December 28 1867 concerning a James Pickles from Haworth, West Riding of Yorkshire. It appears he had a serious accident while drunk when some truck wheels passed over his legs.

How would I find out if this is my 3x great grandfather?

Some time ago I was given an 1863 death reference which I haven't followed up yet.

He doesn't appear on the census after 1861 so I have assumed for some time he died between the census and after seeing this I am not so sure.

Any ideas please?
Thanks.

There are a couple of short reports of his inquest in early 1868.Details that might help identify him were...
James Pickles a Warp Dresser from Spring Head Bar near Haworth. "His wife(unnamed) said he was 50 yrs of age".

Where was this report please?

I have been looking at the death reference I was given a while ago for a James Pickles in the March quarter of 1863.  FreeBMD lists several but none fit what I'm looking for; they range from far too young to too old.  If he died in 1863 he would have been 42/43 years old.

The report I have says he survived the accident but I suppose it could have led to his demise later.

I'll look on FindMyPast to see if I can see the inquest report.

Found the inquest report on FindMyPast.

Everything seems to fit.

The address you mentioned was where my 2x great grandfather James Heaton Pickles was born in 1858.

On the 1851 census James is living at Mill Lane and is a power loom weaver (worsted) and in 1861 he is living at Mytholmes Mill and is a Stuff Piece Hooker.  The word Stuff has been crossed out so I don't know if this is a mistake or not.

James Heaton Pickles lived at Mytholmes Lane for several years.

Thanks very much for your help.

I will now apply for the death certificate knowing I have the correct information.

Today I have found another newspaper report about the inquest and I have applied to the GRO for a PDF certificate.

I just have to find out where he's buried now.

No sign of the burial on the NBI or anywhere online.

I have emailed Keighley Bereavement Services to see if they can help me find him.

These are the replies I got from Keighley and Bradford Bereavement Services;

I have checked the records for Utley Cemetery in Keighley and Charlestown Cemetery in Baildon, the only two Council maintained cemeteries in our area which were open in 1868 and can find no trace of James Pickles. I have forwarded the information to our office in Bradford who will check the records at Scholemoor Cemetery . If he is not there then he will probably have been interred in a local churchyard somewhere. If a church is still open then the records are normally kept by the incumbent or the Parish Council. If the churchyard is no longer in use then some records are kept at Keighley Library and some at the Central Library in Bradford,

Re your online enquiry I am sorry to say there is no record of James Pickles being buried in Scholemoor Cemetery (Scholemoor opened in 1860).

Alternative sources to try are Uncercliffe Cemetery which is now run by a Trust – contact details are 01274 642276 or the Diocese of Bradford which keeps records of interments in Parish Churchyards  contact details 0113 353 0290 Bradford Area Office The Trinity Centre
John Escritt Road Bingley BD16 2ST

I hope this helps and good luck with your search.

I have done a bit more searching on find a grave for all the places I can think of where he might be and come up with nothing.  I haven't phoned the above numbers yet.
