Problem finding Monaghan records in Irishgenealogy.ie
« on: Wednesday 25 October 17 11:41 BST (UK) »
I have returned to my family history research after a few years of neglect and I was looking forward to getting copies of birth certificates of my O’Rourke family who were born in Co. Monaghan. To my consternation I cannot find them! Not even my grandfather Patrick O’Rourke whose certificate I already have! Is there a problem with the site and its search engine or am I doing something wrong? Here are the birth dates of those I tried to look up:

Francis Joseph, 1890
Mary Josephine, 1 April 1892, Gallina
Catherine, 1894, Monaghan town
Patrick, 20 July 1896, Lathlurkin (now spelt Latlorcan)

The parents were Patrick O’Rourke, RIC constable, and Margaret Brady. I have already their marriage certificate of 29 April 1889, but cannot find it on Irishgenealogy.

Are other people having the same problem?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Religion?
Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.

If you search for a marriage of Margaret Brady, 1889, you will find the marriage ;D

Patrick's surname is spelled Orourke (no apostrophe!)
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

Thank you both Hallmark and KGarrad!

I am surprised that the search engine of Irishgenealogy does not take into account the variations of names beginning (or not) with O'.

I have just done a search leaving out the apostrophe and I have found Francis, Mary and Patrick.

No doubt if I try other variants, like Orourke, I will find the others.

The moderator can consider this problem solved.

O' names can often cause a problem, you need to play around with it.
O'Rourke
Orourke
Rourke
O Rourke
O rourke
and than there are the different spellings of Rourke
Rorke and so on.
I've got O'Rourke as well and sometimes I give up on the surname and just search by first name, district and year.

I think it's because there is a subtle difference between O'Rourke, Rourke, Roark, O'Roark (and other variants) and Orourke?

Here, in the Isle of Man, we have a brewery called Okells. It is most definitely not O'Kells!
It was founded by Dr. William Okell from Warrington ;D

On the other hand, I did a tree for a friend, maiden name O'Reilly.
And almost immediately got stuck because some of her father's records were simply Reilly!

Thanks again KGarrad! It is not a question of subtle differences. It is just the result of the English-speaking officials in 19th. century Ireland trying to put down in writing the Irish names they were hearing. The Irish form of the name, which I use, is Ó Ruairc. This leads to further variants such as Ruarc, Ruark, etc. I once saw a site or blog about the O'Rourke's and it listed, I think, 30 odd variants found in the USA...!
