Can find birth registrations for Emma and Frederick William Hewitt with mmn Crighton (or similar) but not samuel yet

He is Samuel Hewitt in 1881 4055/53/44


With mother Elizabeth, sister Emily and other siblings.

Plus visitors Crighton  :)

Judging by 1881 Samuel (b c1878) and Frederick William b1880 are separate individuals

Wow, this is great detective work. So are we saying that Elizabeth J Newat is actually a typo for Hewitt? And Elizabeth J "Newat" (Hewitts) maiden name was Crighton? Or have I got that totally wrong?

Yes the evidence is pointing that way. On 1861 there's an Elizabeth Crighton in Dukinfield b Birkenhead c1847

Now for some speculation

Familysearch has a Henrietta Hewitt b Monson Massachusetts 1866 to an Isaac & Lizzie Hewitt (both English)

07 May 1870 Margaret Hewitt b  Steubenville, Jefferson, Ohio to Isaac Hewitt & Elizabeth Crighton

1871 Isaac Hewitt marries Elizabeth Jane "Cretan" in Jefferson Ohio
