Chambers in Challock
« on: Thursday 26 October 17 02:40 BST (UK) »
Can anyone check for a marriage of Elizabeth Wreight/Wright to a Mr Chambers in Challock (or nearby)?
The marriage possibly took place between 1720 and 1748.

In his 1748 Will, James Wreight of Sheldwich named his daughter Elizabeth "wife of Mr Chambers of Challock". I am trying to see if she is the same Elizabeth who married Richard Chambers in Boughton Aluph in 1729 and whose children were born in Leaveland in the 1730s and 1740s. The only Elizabeth is one born in Boughton Aluph in 1687 but she'd be 55 when the last child was born.

If I can establish the name of the "Mr Chambers" that the Elizabeth Wreight from Sheldwich was married to then I might be able to eliminate her line from my research. If she did marry Richard in 1729 and reside in Leaveland, what is the connection with Challock?

Matt

Hi Jo

Thanks for that info. I thought the marriage might have been by Licence but I've found no record of a Licence.

I note that the EKMI gives the year of marriage as 1728 and the place of marriage as Challock, however I have Richard Chambers and Elizabeth Wreight marrying in Bough Aluph in 1729. Could they have been married in both parishes? Or could one of these sources be wrong, I've not had a chance to see the original registers (or transcripts) for Challock or Boughton Aluph myself. Does the marriage appear in the Challock PRs? Alternatively do you think they intended to marry in Challock, but married in Boughton Aluph instead?

Last question, is there an sign of a christening in Challock for Richard? Elizabeth is certainly the daughter of James Wreight of Sheldwich as the details fit those in his Will.

Thanks again

Matt
