Oh I see - I think she was Alice Maude Wood - they're together unmarried in 1901, running a pub in Bethnal Green (when she's down as Maud Wood), then there is a marriage for them Sep qtr 1903 Mile End.

Slightly more information:

1911 census he states he was born in St.Martins in the Fields and I was always told he was christenened there.
I know for a fact he was married for the 2nd time to Alice in 1903 where he stated he was a widower.
In the 1891 census I found an Edward White whose wife was Elizabeth and he stated he was from the Strand and he was an Athlete.
I do know that in 1888 he was a boxer and became Heavyweight champion of England.
He then became a publican and had pubs in London mostly the East End.
He died in 1936  abt.

What did he say about the name and occupation of his father?

You say 'I know' but just wondering as to your proof.   As avm228 says, what is the name of his father when he married?

I cannot find a birth/baptism for an Edward White in St. Martin in the Fields??

I'm just concerned you could end up following the wrong Edward without some kind of proof.

It seems from the Ancestry card catalogue that their online baptisms for St Martin's in the Fields only goes up to 1858.

Like others, I would like to see Edward's age &occupation plus name & occupation of father from 1903 marriage certificate.

There is a marriage
1901 St Pauls Holborn but because Elizabeth's age is 3 years out I wonder
Edward Charles White 23
Elizabeth Sarah 20

There is a 1 Aug 1891 marriage at St Paul's Clerkenwell for an Edward Charles White type founder age 23 son of Edward James White same occ to Elizabeth Sarah Rayner age 20 daughter of George Robert Rayner cab driver, but as 1 Aug was after 1891 census - unless the couple in the quoted 1891 census are pre-empting the issue  :).

If Elizabeth died it must have been between 1891 & 1903...aged 20 - 32. Nothing jumps out on freebmd yet.

Edward was "single" in the 1901 census with Maud, so I wonder whether he was ever lawfully married to Elizabeth.
