Who is Gladys and Eva Burnett's mother Florence please?
« on: Friday 27 October 17 05:57 BST (UK) »
There's a family living in Streatham in 1901 that might be connected to us.

There's father Charles Burnett, born about 1854 in Bloomsbury with his wife Florence who was born about 1855 in Brixton.  They are described as Charles' daughter.

With them are Gladys aged 3 and Eva aged 2.

A Gladys and Eva Burnett were registered in Wandsworth that fit with these dates but no MMN is on the records.

The Charles I am looking for is Charles William Burnett, son of Charles William Burnett and Mary Hussey.  He was baptised in July 1853 at the Sardinian Chapel, but I haven't found his birth registration.

His brothers were Thomas Henry Burnett (he joined the priesthood), born December 1851 and John Hussey Burnett, born and died in 1855.

In 1861 Charles Snr, Mary with sons Charles and Thomas are in Duke St in Bloomsbury.
In 1871 Mary (widow) and son Charles are in Gt Russell St.
Mary is in Russell St in 1881 with a niece.

I've haven't found Charles in 1881 nor 1891, but this 1901 record looks promising because he says he was born in Bloomsbury.

Can anyone see a marriage to Florence please?  Many thanks.

To muddy the waters I thought I might have found him married to a Mary Coningham/Cunningham, as there is a baptism in the Catholic records of a Charles William Burnett in 1884 in Stepney, but in census records Charles the father says he was born in Ratcliffe.

I got that wrong  at the first attempt. The girls have Burnett as a given name and a surname on the GRO index? Could it be the mother's maiden name wrongly transcribed?

It seems odd that it happened twice though, doesn't it?

I may have found the girls in 1911 at Convent of the Sacred Heart in Putney.  There's May aged 13, Eva aged 12 and Madeleine aged 9.  It says they were born in Clapham, but I can't find Madeleine's birth registration.

The way the parents are named (and also who is the informant) is crucial on these type of searches - you really need to get the certificates.

But, even from the index, you can tell that the mother of Eva and Gladys was called CHARSLEY and that the parents weren't married.   (.....find the entries on FreeBMD and look at other entries on the same page).

Thank you Antony.  I didn't realise you could do that with FreeBMD (by just searching on a  first name).

Thanks Heywood.  So it does look like him, with probate granted to his brother.  His family were still very young when he died.

Is this Madeleine?

Madeleine Ida Burnett shows in London Electoral registers.

She then marries Henry Nickels in 1935.

In later electoral registers Florence M Burnett is at the same address.

Madeleine Ida Nickels  dies 1991, date of birth shows 19th February 1902.
