Alexander RITCHIE, Gourdon

I'm currently reading Norman Watson's "The Dundee Whalers 1750-1914"(Tuckwell Press, 2003). In April 1908 the ketch Snowdrop sailed from Dundee with the whaling fleet and she was to go missing in the Arctic, presumed lost, for 18 months.

"Credit for the eventual deliverance of the party was given to one of the crew, Alexander Ritchie from the Kincardineshire fishing village of Gourdon, who painstakingly plotted his way across 500 miles of treacherous water to bring news of the wreck to a remote mission station in northern Labrador. A vessel which had been sent north to relieve the American explorer Robert Peary was diverted to uplift the men."

Alexander Ritchie would make a fine ancestor for somebody!
