John Dalby Tutin and Sister Helen
« on: Saturday 28 October 17 05:03 BST (UK) »
John was born in London England in 1898. From family search he enters the US in 1925 as a journalist with intention of going to Washington DC. A likely in the 1930 Census as a single man. He is the only John D Tutin  birth registered within 10 years either side of 1900 in England. His deceased father was Christopher and Mother was Jessie Sophia nee Dalby who passed on in 1940 back in England. Did he stay in USA, marry  etc. ? as it looks like him passing on back in Sussex England in 1963.
His sister Helen Mary Elizabeth Tutin born 1901 also travelled to USA but indicated she intended returning to England. I can not find her anywhere.

Just mentioning the 1930 arrival of Susanne into Plymouth, it was out of New York.... and has this additional information:

She is aged 30, no occupation
Country of which subject or Citizen: France
Last Permanent resident of the USA
Intended future permanent residence: England
The manifest puts her age in the column for female "Accompanied by Husband or Wife" (but John is not listed on the same page, because she's on the "Alien" Manifest)

When John went to the USA in 1925, the ship manifest stated he was intending to be in the US for 5 years - so he arrived back in the UK as planned, in 1930.  His 1925 go to address in Washington DC was c/of a Carol Howe Foster of the State Department. So possibly he had a fixed term position of employment there?

The 1930 CENSUS you refer to, fits the bill for John - not at all long before they married:
East 79th Street, Manhattan
Head: John D TUTIN, 31, single, Banker, b England, imm 1925, alien.
He has 2 roomers, all Doctors.

The 1930 has a possible for the soon to be wife (enumeration 17 April)
1142, East 85th Street, Manhattan
Head: Susan MAYER 30, single, Public School Teacher, born France, imm 1919, pa (papers filed for naturalisation).

Susanne's death was registered in the US Soc Sec system  too , looks as if she was drawing a US pension perhaps? :

Suzanne Tutin, born 18 Dec 1899
Soc Sec Nr:  201-40-6699, issued in Pennsylvania
Last Residence: U.S. Consulate) London, United Kingdom
Last Benefit : U.S. Consulate) London, United Kingdom
Born, 18 Dec 1899
Died April 1980:

Thanks Ambly and Rosie17. That was clever of her to get a pension. Looks like they had just the one girl.
