When Charles Childs married Ann Robinson 25/6/1855 Portsea, he is a widower and occupation is Greenwich Pensioner - Ann shown as a widow although her father Thomas also shown as Robinson. Just states 'full age' for both.
1851 Census - Portsea
Charles Childs 42 Greenwich Pensioner b. Portsea
Sarah Childs 34 (??think this should be 39 as she was 30 in 1841) b. Portsea
John B. Childs 4
Sarah F. Childs 1
GRO births index shows maiden name of Sarah was 'Bonney'.
Charles Childs married Sarah Bonney 30/11/1828 Portsea - children born/baptised Portsea:
Charles bc.1828, bp.11/9/1830, buried 17/9/1830
Charles Bonney bp.18/5/1834
Sarah b.Mar.qtr.1839,d. Mar.qtr.1840
1841 Census - Portsea
Sarah Childs 30
Charles Childs 7 living with a Hannam family - Charles senior not with them (probably at sea).
Further children:
James Bonney b.1845, bur.21/10/1847
John Bonney b.1846, bp.29/7/1855
Sarah Frances b.19/9/1849, bp.10/2/1856
James Bonney b.16/8/1851, bp.10/2/1856
Mary Ann b.22/4/1853, bp.10/2/1856
We know that Charles remarried in 1855 so wife Sarah must be the one who died Dec.1854 Portsea aged 42.
By 1861 children John, Sarah, James and Mary are in Portsea Workhouse (as already stated) together with a Francis Joseph Childs - I completely agree with Daisypetal and believe this is actually Thomas Joseph and that enumerator made a mistake (there is no birth for a Francis Joseph Childs).
Can't easily see where Charles and Ann are in 1861 or if either, or both, had died since the children were all in the Workhouse.
Charles Childs bp.22/9/1808 Portsea, son of Joseph and Mary Ann.
