Court Martial
« on: Saturday 28 October 17 12:51 BST (UK) »
Richard Colchester Pitt born 1843.    I find him being court martialled in Bangalore India in 1862 for insubordination and getting 4 years penal servitude.   It seems he was shipped back to England and in 1864 was in an asylum.  Indeed he went to Broadmoor in 1868 !

I wondered if there was any way of seeing a record of his court martial.  I'd be interested to see if there was any sign of his mental issues then ( his Broadmoor record makes very sad reading)

Hi,

Where did you get the information you already have?

It seems that the National Archives have a range of records for courts martial that have been made available by Ancestry.  There is a guide here:

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/help-with-your-research/research-guides/courts-martial-desertion-british-army-17th-20th-centuries/

There are three court martial index records for 'Richd C. Pitt' on Ancestry - I searched for his full name, but don't have an actibve subscription to access the details.  Someone else may be able to get this for you.

Best wishes

Just had a look on the National Archives site.

When I tried to check the information, I got the following information from Ancestry:

"Customer Login"

"The AncestryInstitution.com and AncestryClassroom.com domains are for institutional access only, not personal accounts."

Most annoying.

It may be possible to access the information from a library, but you would have to check.

Thanks for all the replies.  I searched on A..... under his full name and got nothing but thanks to Rockford  it came up on a shortened version.

The first CM is for theft and hes found not guilty, unfortunately the next image  is a repeat of this so no more info there.  (I have reported this). Strangely the one in 1862 shows him "only" receiving 50 lashes - so there must be a later one (or something happened) for his to receive a penal servitude sentence and for him to be shipped home.   More mystery.

Thanks again for your help

Hi,

You're welcome.  I'm glad you found something, although it is always a bit frustrating when your find throws up more questions!

Best wishes
