Help needed!! No service number( POW)
« on: Saturday 28 October 17 15:32 BST (UK) »
Hello all!

Would really appreciate some help or advice!

My granddad William John Jones, believed to have served with the Royal Welsh Fusiliers during WW2 was also POW.
I have no service number.. wrote to the Mod, unfortunately they're unable to trace him. I understand he lied about his age to enlist. Family members believe he may have gone to India. All I have is one photo and his birth & death certificate. Would love some advice! Thank you all

Can we establish which branch of the MOD you wrote to - specifically was it the Army Personnel Centre at Glasgow??

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,

Oh dear, if they were not able to find him by the details you provided then I'm not sure what would work, despite what some sites may tell you, his records will not be on line.

Not helpful I'm afraid. hopefully someone will rock up wit a decent idea!

Good luck.

Thought it would be worth a try. Would of been, easier, if I had a service number. Makes it difficult to find him and he lied about his age
..so makes it even more difficult. My dad remembers playing with his medals that we no longer have anymore. He believes it to be The Burma Star. But not 100% sure.Thank you for your reply thou.

Does nt sound like he was a prisoner in Europe but there is the following
W J Jones Royal Welsh Fusiliers army no 3958617
POW number 20111 Stalag 1V A Hohenstein, Hesse.
Infantry Record Office, Shrewsbury, Shropshire.
Unlikely to be him if he served in the east, where was he born?

Straw clutching.

Both the 1st and 2nd Battalions RWF served in the Far East.  While they will not have his records, it might be that the Royal Welch museum would have something on Far East POWs.  Worth an email to the contact ??  http://www.rwfmuseum.org.uk/soldier-record.html

Thanks Max and Cathy

Cathy :

Checked that service number already...no luck unfortunately.  He was from Caernafon.

Max:

I Was in contact with someone from the Royal Welsh forum..recently they explained that to his knowledge that no Fusiliers were captured. But I will make contact with museum..see what they have to say.Visited there, some years ago now. Might go again, when I visit the family in Wales.

Thank you both
