Christian Rice and William Buckingham
« on: Saturday 28 October 17 18:20 BST (UK) »
Hi All,
Can anybody solve this mystery? I have in my family tree a Christian Rice married to a William Buckingham. The ONLY couple with this combination of names appear to have been married in tetbury in Gloucestershire in 1767. However, their children seem to have been baptised in st Mary's Witney or in Tetbury, in more or less alternating years. The only marriage for william in Witney is to Catharine smith in 1761. There are no marriages in witney for Christian. william and Christian appear to have had 6 children in Tetbury and 7 in witney. William and catharine appear to have had 2 children in tetbury, even though their marriage took place in witney. catharine was buried in tetbury. Can anyone shed any light on this? Was William married to two people at the same time? Are catharine and Christian one and the same person? Or is there another William Buckingham and Catharine smith married in tetbury? I certainly can't find another marriage for william and Christian except in Tetbury. Can anyone help please?

Where does your information related to William Buckingham and Christian Rice come from?  You say they are in your family tree, so where does that information originate?

OK - found the marriage 14 May 1767 at Tetbury by Licence.  BOTP, William is a bachelor, and Christian a spinster.  Both signed the register.

Added:  I would be inclined to see whether the Marriage Bond and/or Allegation have survived.  These are often informative in relation to occupation, age etc.

The marriage between William Buckingham and Catharine Smith - Witney, Oxfordshire, after Banns.  William is a Labourer and did not sign the register.  John Buckingham (x) was a witness.
