Hugh McLindon Margaret Gormley NY
« on: Saturday 28 October 17 19:54 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for information on the marriage of Hugh McLindon and Margaret Gormley in New York about 1918. Living together in Yonkers Sep 1918, ,looking like she's taken his name.

And also Margaret's subsequent death in 1922 (she was born in 1889).

Marriage by License 2/5/1917

Just to clarify, it's 2 May 1917, rather than the way the abbreviation would be read in the US.  That would have been the date they got the marriage license, rather than the date they married.  I can't seem to find an actual marriage record for them.  There is a database on www.familysearch.org and Groom's/Bride's indexes on www.italiangen.org, if you want to take a look

There is a passport application for Hugh & his children from Sep. 1922 here - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QV5Y-PLQD  If you go to the 2nd page, there is a picture of them.  This application says he was naturalized in 1921, so those records might include a date & location of his marriage to Margaret.

Thanks for all the responses. I can't find a record of their marriage either. It looks like Hugh was married before to a Mary Moran in 1912.

I wonder what happened to her as he leaves the US in 1914 and comes back in 1915. Then marries Margaret in 1917.

Just a thought. The surname McAlinden is  very common in the Newry area of County Down whereas McLindon is probably unknown.(Remember the heavyweight boxer Danny McAlinden of yesteryear. He was from Newry). Perhaps the records you can't find were registered under McAlinden.

The 1915 passenger list says Hugh was a widower.

The Westchester County archives naturalization index says that Hugh Bernard Mclindon filed a petition for naturalization in 1921.  http://archives.westchestergov.com/browse-all-online-indexes-main/naturalizations-index  He's also on an index of declarations of intent filed in New York County between 1907 & 1924, but it doesn't give a year.

This looks like it might be your Margaret Gormley in the 1915 New York state census - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:K92V-B71  She was a servant for a family headed by newspaper man John M. Quinn.  I think Hugh would have missed that census, as he arrived too late in the year for it.

Looking at the 1920 census - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MJYW-VYW - it seems to line up fairly well with Margaret being in the US for 2 years as of 1915.
