Emmett family Christchurch
« on: Sunday 29 October 17 04:17 GMT (UK) »
About 1950's early 1960's, the late Emmett sisters, managed, or maybe owned, a bakery shop in Christchurch, on Shirley Road, near Marshland Road corner, opposite Shirley Intermediate School.
I believe these ladies could be daughters of Arthur William Emmett, who farmed land around Quinns Road & owned houses in North Parade, Shirley, Christchurch.
A W Emmett died in 1948, aged abt. 87 years. His children are all deceased.
I'm researching the shop owners & their family history, as a genealogy group project.
Can anyone remember the Christian names of the shopkeeper sisters, please?
Two possibles are Ruth Emmett 1910 - 1987 and her sister Gertrude 1893 - ?. Both these ladies never married. Recorded as spinsters on the electoral rolls, so no help re their occupation.
Thank you,
Valsgirl

Thank you for your reply, Minniehaha,
I have all those details from NZ bmd, Electoral rolls, papers past, etc.
Just need to prove that I've the correct family & if so, would like to know who mamaged the shop.
Probably a query that could only be answered by a local resident, or an Emmett descendant.
I might try a Christchurch family history group, or Library.

When "The Palms" shopping centre was build, on Marshland Road, Christchurch, corner, the little shopping centre, including Emmett's Bakery went. Just memories left.
I appreciate you takling time to research.
Cheers,
Valsgirl

That would be great, Suzy W.
I once lived on Marshland Road and as a Shirley Intermediate pupil, was occassionally allowed to buy my lunch at Emmett's. They served huge icecreams for 4d also!
Many thanks.

Sorry, my uncle only remembers the ladies working there, but not their names.
Have you tried Canterbury Museum or Archives in Town?

Thank you Suzy W,
Good suggestions, but as I now live in Australia, have to rely on online transscriptions, and helpful forums. Did look at Archway site, but only found probates on there.
On Ancestry site, last night, I found Ms. Ruth Emmett listed in "NZ City & Area Directories 1953-1954" as "frtr" (guess Fruiterer) 83 Shirley Road, Christchurch. This looks very promising.
No mention of Gertrude Emmett, born Christchurch NZ in 1893. I wondered if the two single sisters Ruth & Gertrude Emmett may have been "my ladies". Gertrude is on electoral rolls as a spinster until 1949, when I lose her. This coincides with her father's 1948 death, so I tried looking for a marriage or travel, with no luck.
Understandably, a 10 yr old child would remember the buns, fruit pies and ice creams, but not the fruit!
Many thanks to you & your Uncle.
