The son of James Gandy, cab driver, and wife Sarah i.e. William bc.1885 married in Liverpool in 1910 to an Ethel McLoughlin - married as William Henry Gandy and father given as James, cab driver BUT there is no birth entry in this name in Liverpool ca. this date.    (A plain William born a couple of years later is the son of another couple).

The William Gandy b.1886 Liverpool is the one I was referring to - mmn Routledge.   The parents are not James and Sarah.

The parents are John Gandy who married Margaret Routledge June qtr.1882 Liverpool.

However, I have found the following marriage but don't know if it's James Gandy, cab driver, or simply a 'red herring'.

James Gandy (transcribed as Gaudy on Ancestry), Car Proprietor, married a Jane Higginson 26/6/1873 St Stephen the Martyr, Liverpool.

Feel sure the 1873 marriage is the right 'James' - possibly a 1st marriage?

On 1871 census (2 years before marriage) James and Jane are in Everton - he's a 'Coachman' with Jane shown as wife and 2 children: Jane aged 6 and John aged 13m.   A Lodger is an Anne Higginson. 
In 1881 these 2 children plus another sibling 'Anny' are living as grandchildren with aforementioned Anne Higginson in Toxteth Park.

So what happened to the family between 1871 and 1881?

Did wife Jane die?   Did James take up with a Sarah but not actually marry her?   If so, the children probably registered in their mothers surname which is right now not known i.e. including a Florence ca.1879 and William Henry ca.1885. 

The subject of this thread - Florence H M Gandy - as she married as plain Florence can you tell us what the second 2 initials stand for?

Hi maybe only a coincidence, but with that James Gandy in 1881, Single 38 occ Coachman Domestic b Liverpool is a Sarah Hughes 35 Single occ Seamstress b Liverpool plus a Mary Hughes 23 Single occ Sick Nurse and a Louisa Titherley 36 Widow occ Seamstress

Does not help re c 1879 birth for Florence though, but age/location/single for Sarah?

The census, 1911, names six children born, no children deceased. These births can be found using FreeBDM, using vol 8b.....al W.Derby.  Using FreeBDM, any later births should include mother's maiden name.

I cannot see any STAFFORD births with GANDY (or variations) mother. Florence, aged 32years, should have several more child-bearing years.

I think it is likely that Florence is not born to a GANDY father.

Which STAFFORD births, 1911+  W. Derby, are to Florence.......what family name does she use?
