William Gourley/Gurley/Gorley - Long Benton
« on: Monday 30 October 17 09:36 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

I have recently discovered my link to the Gourley/Gurley/Gorley family, via my 4xGt Grandmother, Elizabeth Gurley, who married Christopher Hall in 1836.

I have this baptism:

Elizabeth Gourley
27th August 1815
Long Benton, Northumberland
Father: William Gourley
Mother: Elizabeth

I also have this death record:

William Gourley
Age 61
Birth date 1782
Death date 30th April 1843
Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland

I think there are two William/Elizabeth marriages.  There was a marriage for a William to an Elizabeth Marsh, which is not the one for my family.

Can anyone find any records in connection with this family?  I'd love to get further back, if possible.

Many thanks, Emma  :)

This appears to be the Charles 1824 with his Mother in 1841.

1841 Census
Longbenton
Elizabeth Gouty, 60, Widow Ind, born Scotland
Charles Gouty, 17, Colliery?, born in County
Robert Gouty 10

So it appears her Husband cannot be the one who died 1843.

Hi Trish,

Thanks for your replies and the info. I only discovered the link last night (while going over old ground with the GRO indexes) and, as usual I want to make discoveries already!

I had my suspicions about Scotland. Other than one line that goes to Northern Ireland, I'm English through and through at least as far back as 1830. Even Scotland would be quite exotic!!  ;D

Right, William, where are you????

Hi Emsworthy,

Yes that early 1841 Death Reg looks good for William.

That couple William G and Elizabeth Bailey were the only other couple I could find.
So I hope it was of some help.

Trish :)

Cooper, Fife, North Britain is an English Official rendering his interpretation of Cupar,  Fife, Scotland.

My genealogy on the Gourley line is:

Lancelot Gourley born abt Sept. 1887, Dudley Colliery, Weetslade, Tynemouth, Northumberland.
Married Margaret Telfer 3 Oct 1908 Collierley  (sic),  (Annfield Plain), County Durham.

I see I have more work to do.

Hi Barry,

I'm working down the lines of Gourleys, so it is likely that I'll stumble across Lancelot at some point. Will let you know when I do! :)
