Grace Susannah Stevens 1846-1861?? and spouse Osborne
« on: Monday 30 October 17 19:06 GMT (UK) »
Looking for added info on a cousin and her family in Australia.

I have a Grace Susannah Stevens born 5 APR 1846 Bethnal Green, Middlesex, England to Samuel Stevens and Grace Pope.

Unsure of when she travelled to Australia but she married 22 Oct. 1861 in Victoria, Australia.  Her  spouse was Osborne, possibly born in Devon, England and we have seen his given name as Gauls, Gaius, Gauis in various spots but have not seen the marriage document.  A hint on Ancestry shows Gauls.

All searches for him have found nothing.

I had  Grace Susannah Stevens' death as 30 OCT. 1861  Campbells Creek, Victoria, Australia from Scarlett Fever.  However, I found a possible child Grace Susannah Osborne Birth 24 OCT. 1861 Campbells Creek, Victoria, Australia and Death 31 OCT 1861 Campbells Creek, Victoria, Australia.  So wondering if mother and child passed at same time or do I have the two confused?  If Scarlett fever, unlikely both would die same day.

Not unlikely at all. Also maybe the mother was ill with scarlett fever before the birth the baby may have been affected in some way and wasnt well when she was born. Her death cert. should have cause of death.

A Gaius Osborn  (no E) married in 1877 in Axminster district (Devon), possibly to Mary England, and died in Axminster district in 1910 aged 77.

The misspelling "Gains" in some records I think is because a handwritten "u" and "n" are often mistaken. His father was Samuel

Can't find him inwards but Mr Gains Obsorne, aged 40, was on the Superb heading to London in 1874

Thanks for the replies.

I found a nephew of Gaius Osborne, Clyde Gaius Osborne Stevens Birth 1882  Fitzroy, Victoria, Australia Death 16 SEP. 1975 West Brunswick, Victoria, Australia

He was son of

Samuel Thomas Stevens 1851–1931

Elizabeth Ann Flannery 1861–1951

This seems to confirm the name and that the family was close.

I find Clyde Gaius Osborne Stevens  in several records.  Several images of him are posted online.

The Devon marriage could be a second marriage after Grace Susannah passed and the infant also.  Did he return to England? The Devon connection I have was from an online tree.

The outbound passage would have him back in England in time to marry again in 1877.  Looks like a switch to England resources needed.  Was he listed as a widow when he married in England in 1877?

Finding the marriage to Grace Susannah  might add a parent name to link the England records.

Just found an obituary for Samuel Thomas Stevens, Grace Susannah's brother, posted Thursday, December 24, 1931.

In a footnote "No mention of Alfred William who probably died in infancy in South Australia, nor of Grace Susannah who married Gaius Osborne and then died in the same year together with her baby (Grace Susannah Osborne), nor of Rebecca Mary who had probably married William Bingham in Grenfell, N.S.W. and who died in Gosford"

The marriage cert. should if filled out correctly give parents names, place of birth etc.
I posted the marriage details in #1 on here.
