Eliza Jane Lewis - Possible death and private baptism
« on: Tuesday 31 October 17 13:18 GMT (UK) »
Eliza Jane Lewis was born on 5th July 1865 (taken from baptism record), but not baptised until January 22nd 1874 (St Peter, Regent Square, Camden district).  This delay in itself is not unusual, but next to the entry are the words 'Private Baptism' and as her father was just a carman and there are no other baptisms with that added in the same church around that time, it appears unusual.  A possible explanation is that she was not expected to live for long, so a quick baptism was arranged and there is a death registered for someone of the same name in Pancras JFM (1b 31) with about 1866 as the birth year.  She is also not at home on the 1881 census, whilst her older sister is, so do you think it would be a reasonable assumption that she died in 1874?

Some people get baptised on their death bed, just in case !

I'd found that death too and think it's too coincidental, but as she is not that direct an ancestor I'll wait until I eventually get a death certificate to confirm it.
