Harry Mathieson or Mann
« on: Tuesday 31 October 17 16:53 GMT (UK) »
"Uncle Harry" served in WW1. Apparently he joined the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders in 1916 and later the Machine Gun Corps. He was wounded and lost a leg.
He was born Harry Mathieson in Elgin in 1899 but was brought up in Forfar as Harry Mann where he was raised and where he lived and worked after the war.
I have so far been unable to find his attestation, service or pension details.
look forward to receiving any information.

Unfortunately his records were amongst the 70% lost in WW2.
What there is states he attested 8/8/1917. There's no indication he served in the A&SH.

Over 60% of WW1 service records were burnt during the WW2 blitz

Have you looked on the Medal Roll Index?  Nothing under either surname for the Argyll & Southern but there is a Harry Mathieson Machine Gun Corp number 136138 and a Harry Mann 151569

Apparently he joined the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders in 1916

He would only have been 17yrs old at that time

Quote
What was the age of conscription in ww1?

Conscription during the First World War began when the British government passed the Military Service Act in 1916. The act specified that single men aged 18 to 40 years old were liable to be called up for military service unless they were widowed with children or ministers of a religion.

Many boys lied about their age and joined up under 18yrs old
