Joseph Robinson b. 1887 - Was he a Tiger?
« on: Tuesday 31 October 17 19:06 GMT (UK) »
Hi peeps

I am trying, but failing, to help someone solve a bit of a mystery.

Her grandfather was Joseph Robinson b. 14 Dec 1887 in Burbage, Leicestershire, s/o William and Hester.  We have his birth certificate and baptism and him on the 1901 and 1911 census with his parents and his marriage certificate in 1919.  The family has a photo of him in uniform during WWI and he's wearing a cap with the badge of the Leicestershire Regiment.

When he married in Hinckley in 1919 his address is given as 42 Church St, Burbage, and his occupation is Dyer.  On the 1918 Absent Voters' List for 42 Church St, there's a Joseph Robinson listed as Service No. "211354 826th Area Emp. Co. Labour Corps".

We've found the Medal Card and Medal Roll entries for 211354 Joseph Robinson, but no other service documentation.

However, that doesn't explain where the Leicestershire Regiment comes in.  ???

There is a Joseph Robinson who was in the Leicestershire Regiment (No. 35956) and the Labour Corps (No. 12361).  Again, Medal Card and Medal Roll entries found but no other service documentation.

Is there any way that these Joseph Robinsons could be one and the same man?  If not, can anyone explain why he's wearing a Leicestershire cap?  He wasn't a joker or a Jack-the-lad, I'm told, so think we can rule that out.

Any ideas, anyone, please?

Thanks
STG

The most likely explanation is that Joseph of Church Street didn't serve overseas in the Leicestershire Regiment and thus it doesn't appear on his medal records.

Bit of a coincidence with the other Joseph but, given the numbers involved, not totally out of the question.

Their other service records of course likely to have been destroyed in WW2.

I know about the destroyed records, but am intrigued by your comment "given the numbers involved".  Could you explain more, please?

With the large number of men involved in WW1 & with such a common name there are bound to be men of the same name with the same Regiments.
The LC wasn't formed until 1917 so plenty of time for him to have served in the Leicesters first.

My own grandfather's service records did survive and show him in a number of regiments including some service in France, but the only regiment mentioned on his Medal Card/Roll is the Labour Corps, which was his last regiment.

So it's a puzzle that some cards mention more than one regiment when other cards don't.

One of the reasons may be that with an Average Regiment their may be around 15-20,000 men on the medal roll, with the Labour Corps it was almost 400,000.
With some men of the Infantry/Artillery who moved around they could take up several lines of a page.
So it may be for practical reasons that previous Batts. weren't included on the LC Rolls.
However as MaxD said all Batts. that a man served overseas with should be included in chronological order.
On the LC Roll this regulation is crossed out.
Information on the cards was taken from the Rolls.

Thanks Jim

Here's Joseph (on the right) in his Tigers cap and his brother in an unidentified cap badge.  Any ideas what regiment the brother might have been in, please?
