BRICK WALL - MARGARET HARRIS, HAMILTON LANARKSHIRE MID 1800'S
« on: Wednesday 01 November 17 22:15 GMT (UK) »
I'm finding that in order to go backwards I must now go sideways.

I'm looking for information on my great great great grandmother.

She's been discussed on here before - Born Margaret Harris circa 1807 in Hamilton Lanarkshire. Can't find a record of the birth. Her parents were Thomas Harris and Ann Cunningham - they married Hamilton 1783.

I cant find any record of Margaret's birth or evidence of any siblings. I cant find her parents on a census or any death records.

On 1841 census that Margaret is listed on,  her grand mother Margaret Cunningham is listed as an old lady living with her granddaughters family - which suggests to me that by this time thomas and ann are dead or emigrated and left the old lady behind. Can any one shed any light on this for me please. Margaret Harris  went on to marry 1st Peter Strachan ad then Robert Martin

Can you please post links to any other threads to save duplication of effort?

Have you tried a variation of spelling such as Harries/Harres in other areas rather than just Lanarkshire?

Not all children were baptised & not all records have survived.

Not sure if you have this brother?

"Born Margaret Harris circa 1807"

Seems an awful gap if Mark born 1785 is a brother?

Could it be that Thomas Harris and Ann Cunningham were actually her g/parents?

Also you need to amend your post as you say here that her first husband was Peter Strachan but looking at your previous thread he was James Strachan.

Re. 1841 Census - if Margaret's mother was Ann Cunningham and married 1783 she'd have been born ca. 1760.   The Margaret Cunningham with her was bc.1756 so cannot be a grandmother (possibly an aunt?).

Looks like she also had a brother Peter Harris bc.1801 Hamilton - he's living in Bathgate, West Lothian in 1851 and died there in 1856.    His parents are shown as Thomas Harris, shoemaker and Ann Harris (maiden name unknown by the informant).

On 1841 census that Margaret is listed on,  her grand mother Margaret Cunningham is listed as an old lady

I have never seen any relationship shown on an 1841 census i.e. how do you know that Margaret was her g/mother?

Annie

Add....Annette, didn't get red alert as I had reply open while still searching ;)

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Thank you for all the help so far.

Sorry I made a typo and her husband was James. Peter Strachan was her son.

Thanks for helping me find 2 brothers, I assumed that Margaret was her granny due to the age difference - I guess im wrong...

Thanks Forfarian...

Not sure I have a spare week in the near future  :D

Paul_mc...

I think it may be worth trying to trace Mark as it's a far less common name?

I'm not convinced yet, he & Margaret were siblings but don't let my thoughts put you off!

What were the names of Margaret's children?
