Adoption!
« on: Thursday 02 November 17 00:47 GMT (UK) »
Hello ,

Today , my father told me that he was adopted in August 1932 and that he was born in London . He said that the  record of his birth has been removed from the records to protect parents from harassment. He doesn’t know his birth date or parents names . How can I find his real parents names ?

It‘s very important  :(

Best wishes

Jane

Don't  know a lot about adoption records but try the below websites:-

Not sure how much help they will be for you but have a look and see what you think.

Hi Jane

Your father needs to approach the General Register Office at Southport and apply for access to his birth records.

https://www.gov.uk/adoption-records

Because he was adopted before 1975, he will have to attend a counselling session before access to his file is granted but I understand this can be done locally and speaking to others who have had this session, it is not at all daunting but really beneficial as the seeing your birth file is a Pandora's box.

To clarify your comment ( "He said that the  record of his birth has been removed from the records" ), this isn't strictly true. If he knew his birth name and date and place of birth he could potentially find his entry in the birth index and apply for his certificate.

This is the type of information that will be given when he has access to his file.

Good luck to you and your father in this.

Dawn

If he was adopted in 1932, then it would have gone through the official process that was introduced in 1927.

He would have had a certificate from the Adopted Children's Register, that serves as a birth certificate for the adopted child - it could be a full or short version.

His original birth register entry will have been marked as adopted, not removed or hidden.

The problem, assuming his name was changed when he was adopted, is finding the name on that original record so a copy can be ordered.

He has the right to be told the information, and to see his adoption file it it can be traced, but he has to go through certain steps to do so. Start by speaking to the adoption services team of his local (usually County) council - they will explain the process and help get things started.

It's not removed it's still there - he just won't know the birth name

If he (or anyone) ordered a copy of the certificate it will have adopted written in the margin - but no link to who adopted them

I found a birth which seemed to link with my grandmother in 1933 and ordered it - my grandmother was listed as the mother but it had adopted written in the margin

More recently my husband was born in 1976 - his original birth record still shows under his birth name (he was adopted when he was 9 and knows his original surname and first names are the same)

You've no need to tell us the details as your father is still living, but it would be nice to know at some stage in the future if he succeeds in his mission to find his birth parents' names.

Good luck.

Hello again ,

I have not found out yet. My father passed away 4 years ago and I really want to find out where he came from and his birth name ,Date and parents . How can I get more information? My father said that he doesn’t know his birth date only year and birthplace,1932 in London . But he didn’t know his birth name or anything about his parents . His adoptive parents came from Wokingham Berkshire and that where he lived . I hope someone can help me . Where can I find his adoption papers or how can I found out about his birthdate and parents ? There are many questions that I have no answer for . I have used the links you‘ve sent but all the people said they can not help me .

Greetings

Jane
