Can someone please help with the wording of Otto's Memorium card as it's in German, which I don't have.

What little German I still have from school, I used to find this for you in the German War graves pages. You may already have it.

Surname:Straub
Forename:Otto
Rank:Gefreiter
Date of birth:26.02.1916
Place of birth:Linach
Date of death/becoming missing:03.09.1941
Place of death/becoming missing:HVPl.1/160,F.-laz.13.Pz.Div.Nowossjetika

Otto Straub is buried in the military cemetery in Charkow. (Kharkov, Ukraine)

Endgrablage: Block 12 Reihe 5 Grab 817 <--I think this locates the grave in the cemetery.

You can search here and also request a photo I think:

The poem reads something like this:

We can not offer him flowers
his grave is so far far away
he slumbers gently in full peace
freed from this earthly suffering
He died as a hero for greater Germany
Died an honourable death
and the one who is powerful
<<not sure what this bit means>>
has freed him from struggles and death

Many thanks for that "dublin1850". It adds to what little I knew already.  ;D

Hello Alistair,

Just in case you wanted to know what the card itself says:

In pious memory
In prayer for
our dear good son and brother
Otto Straub
Private First Class
Bearer of the (Infanterie-Sturmabzeichens) Infantry Assault Badge
wounded on 2nd September (xxxxx)
died in the field hospital on 3rd September 19xx
at the age of 25, buried in
the military cemetery (Novosjelta?) on the
road to (Krivoi Nog? Krivoi Rog?) (Rußxxxx)

Dublin has already provided the year (1941) which is too faint to read here
and has kindly already translated the poem.

Under the poem it says:

Please say an "Our father..." for the dear (Gefallenen)
(Gefallenen = someone killed in action - I can't think of a nice short word which fits in here! :-))

The Infantry Assault Badge (Infanterie Sturmabzeichen) was a German war badge awarded to Waffen SS and Wehrmacht Heer soldiers during World War II. This decoration was instituted on December 20, 1939 by the Oberstbefehlshaber des Heeres, Generalfeldmarschall von Brauchitsch. (Wikipedia)

There is a Krivoy Rog <Krywyj Rih> in southern Ukraine. See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kryvyi_Rih   (“Nazi occupation”) Maybe this is the place.

I hope this helps.  :)

Best regards,
Karen
