I can't readily see a Gregory/Smith marriage but as she is slightly older I would hazard a guess that she could have been a widow and although Smith might be her maiden name - as indicated on the gro record - it might not have been the name she married Gregory with.

The only George Gregory marriage to a Mary which might fit is that on 10 Feb 1835 at St. Leonard, Shoreditch to a Mary Isabella Chapman who was a widow.  It was by licence.

For what its worth there is a marriage of a Maria Smith to a Francis Augustus Chapman at St Leonard, Shoreditch on 2 June 1828.

Also Francis Augustus Chapman was buried at All Hallows, City of London on 8 July 1830 age 27.

Hi Pheno & Jjen

You have helped me enormously to take the family back to 1809. I have found a baptism for George 26/2/1809 son of George Gregory & Lucy, which fits with the information you provided from the 1841 Census. It looks like George & Lucy were born c1780 and married 1800/5.

Kind Regards

David

Whilst looking for something else I came across these 3 Gregory baptisms on the same day at St. Leonard, Shoreditch.

bp 5 March 1837
Walter James  b. 15 Feb 1837
George John   b. 19 January 1830 or 1831?
Mary Ann Sarah b. 5 July 1833

in all cases the father is George, living at New Inn Yard and is a weaver.  However, in each instance the mother is recorded as Sarah.  However these baptisms fit in nicely with the 1841 census found by Jen.

Also baptism on 3 March 1839 of Emily Elizabeth Gregory daughter of George and Sarah Gregory, a weaver of New Inn Yard.

If this is the correct 1841 family then presumably Sarah must have died between Emily's birth in 1839 and the 1841 census so maybe looking for the George/Mary marriage in the wrong decade.

Will see what I can find.  Pheno

This is a bit of a conundrum - maybe there are 2 Gregory families as there doesn't appear to be an appropriate death.

There is a marriage of a George Gregory and a Sarah Smith at St. Leonard's Shoreditch on 25 Dec 1830 but I cannot see the original for details.

However, this fits all the children and is the right time frame and mmn is Smith as per the gro index but her name at marriage and at the children's baptisms is Sarah rather than Mary as in both the 1841 and 1851 census, unless of course, she is named something like her daughter Mary Ann Sarah and sometimes uses Mary and sometimes Sarah.

Anyway will let someone else figure that out.

Hi Pheno

Many thanks, I would tend to agree, unless Sarah died and George married her sister Mary ? There is the death of a Sarah Gregory in the Shoreditch RD in June qtr 1840

Kind Regards

David

On the 1861 George's wife is named as Sarah -

George Gregory   52 Silk Weaver
Sarah Gregory   57
Rosetta Gregory   18
Albert Gregory   14

The marriage Pheno found looks good and ties in well with the birth of their first child George c.1831.
