Jane Hannon from Bangor
« on: Thursday 02 November 17 20:44 GMT (UK) »
I am researching a great grandie Jane Hannon (married name Leicester and possibly with a middle name Emma). Jane was born abt 1827 and died in Liverpool in 1875. Her father was noted as Michael (gardener) in marriage details. One census document states she was born in Bango, Cumberland (?), another as Bangor Caernarvonshire and yet another as in Lancashire! I'm going with Bangor at this point! I can't find a birth record for her and nothing on her parents apart from the mention of Michael. Hannon seems to be an Irish based name (from my observations at least) so I wonder if the family actually came over from Ireland? Thanks for any information you can provide  ;D

1871 has a 4yr old son David.  GRO maiden name search shows mmn as Hannah

Son James b 1852 - mmn Hannan

Sarah Ann b 1846 & John b 1848 - mmn Hammon

One census document states she was born in Bango, Cumberland (?)

I don't see that.

1851 Bangor, Caermarthen
1861 Bangor, Carnarvon (probably, it is difficult to read)
1871 Sankey, Lancashire

As the 1871 is dittoed with her husband then you are probably right to ignore it.

Although the actual 1851 image shows Bangor Carmarthen - it has been incorrectly transcribed as Bango Cumberland on Ancestry

Thanks everyone thus far. Any tips (apart from the usual with Ancestry, FS, etc) on how I can find her birth and assuming she is in fact from Bangor?

Who were the witnesses when she married?  Was it a Catholic marriage?

Hi Debra, the witnesses were Joseph Kay and Betty Kay, (X). They were married in St Paul Warrington which is CoE but in this period that probably doesn't mean they weren't RC?

Just a thought, did the enumerator assume that Bangor was in Wales whereas it might have been the one in County Down?

Yffor.com has now transcribed all the baptism records for Bangor from 1813-1851 http://yffor.com/churchchapel.html also transcribed are the burial registers from 1813-1862 http://yffor.com/cemeteries.html
A quick scan of both showed no record of the surname Hannon or its derivatives.
I am afraid that this is no positive help but possibly crosses off one line of investigation.
To add to the possibilities it might be that Jane was born in one of the parishes surrounding Bangor but the English enumerator used Bangor because it was easier to spell.
