New TV series about family history and DNA
« on: Thursday 02 November 17 21:25 GMT (UK) »
I spotted this and thought it may be of interest to Rootschatters.

The Secrets In My Family is a 6 part series starting on Monday 6th November at 9pm on W Channel.  The show, in partnership with Ancestry, uses DNA testing to uncover family history mysteries.

The timing of the show is clever in the run up to Christmas, when families get together.  I'm sure Ancestry are hoping people will whip out their newly purchased Ancestry DNA kit and swab Uncle George as soon as he's finished his Christmas Pud  ;D

Thanks for highlighting that, Jool. I'd have missed it otherwise.

I've never really understood DNA testing and wondered whether it was worth the bother. I hope I'll learn something, though I already knew that my first cousin is a fruitcake and nutty to boot!!  ::)

However, if its along the lines of that Davina McCall programme with everyone weeping all over each other, I'll swerve!!
HELP!!!

 BATHSHEBA BOOTHROYD bn c. 1802 W. Yorks.

Baptism nowhere to be found. Possibly in a nonconformist church near ALMONDBURY or HUDDERSFIELD.

Thank you, I did know it was going to be on but not when it was starting.  I'll set it to series record so I'll be sure not to miss the programmes.

Jill, I have never really understood DNA testing either, that's part of the reason I want to watch it, to try to get a better understanding.  I have read many posts on the subject here on Rootschat but still remain quite confused.

I have a few fruitcakes in my family too, and going back in time the odd Fruity Tart  :o ;D

You get the best DNA sample if they haven't eaten for a while.  If they're in the habit of fasting for communion they could be filling the container with spit while they're sitting in the pew!

That shows just how little I know about DNA, I thought you had to swab inside your cheek not spit in a container.  See, I've learned something already.
