Help dating a photo of Elizabeth Clark please
« on: Saturday 04 November 17 09:47 GMT (UK) »
I think this maybe a photo of my great great grandmother, but am not sure. She had 3 children born between 1871 and 1873 and I'm hoping to be able to either exclude or confirm the possibility. They lived in Holly Village, Highgate and so I think this fits with the photographic studio.

Thank you for any help you can provide.

Hi and welcome to RootsChat...this Carte de Viste would certainly fit with early/mid 1870s as the corners became rounded after that so as to fit more easily into album sleeves. Most likely to be her first born as her other children would have been in the photo.

Hi C-A, welcome to Rootschat. You didn’t ask for a restore so I hope you don’t mind my removing a few (zillion) spots from your picture.

And, just something odd that I noticed while working on it - It seems to me that the baby’s eyes may have been painted on. (Perhaps with a magnifying glass on the original you can determine this better than I can.)

I think this can mean a post mortem photo but I don’t know enough about it to comment further. (There are enough “false facts” out there now.) Perhaps an expert on here will come along and help us out because if I’m right it may have implications for the identities of the people.

Thank you Peter!

Now this is interesting because Elizabeth's second daughter Lilian died at the age of 3 (and a year after her father).  The child looks younger than that to me, but I'm not sure. I also have a ring with the initials of Lilian and her father on it. It used to have hair in it and I believe this was quite common in Victorian times.

I can't really tell if the eyes have been touched up, but I'll get the magnifying glass out later to try and see.

Thanks again.

I'm sure no expert, but I think the Mum looks too happy for this to be a post mortem photo.

Ok, we have had the magnifying glass out and I can confirm that the photo has been worked on - it looks like the child's dress has been added on afterwards (including what appear to be scratches to make the pleats in the skirt) and possibly also the eyes - although they are so small it is difficult to tell.
