Scarborough Old Town ~ Edmond's Yard & Hornsey's Passage
« on: Sunday 05 November 17 09:40 GMT (UK) »
I have ancestors living in both Edmond's Yard & Hornsey's Passage off Longwestgate in the old town of Scarborough.
I have been unable to locate where they are.
All suggestions & help appreciated :-)

Are those addresses from a census?  Could be they don't exist anymore but paging back and forth on the census to surrounding streets (if that's where they came from) sometimes helps  :)

In the 1871 census, numbers 52, 53 and 54 LongWestGate (sic) are simply described as such, whereas there is also a "53a Hornsey Pass. LongWestGate". Inhabitants are John Dalton and family.

There is also a 53b, for which the writing is less clear, but it's Hornsey or Hornsey's [something], inhabitants are Samuel Laurence and family.

I found this by Googling "scarborough longwestgate hornsey's passage" and then searching on Findmypast using the info from the second search result.

Note the John Hornsey mentioned in this article, who might or might not be relevant:

White's directory 1840 has a Stephen Edmond, master mariner, living on Long Westgate. Possibly he had a yard.

As Milliepede says, browsing the census is probably the most fruitful source of info.
BARTRAM - Nottingham, Derby, originally Beds (Stagsden)
PERFETT - St Pancras & Marylebone, Rugby, Nottingham
RADFORD - Nottinghamshire, also back & forth to Bury
RUDD - Durham, Margate, Bermondsey, Newcastle, Nottingham

Thanks for the information.
It is the John Dalton & family that I am currently tracing.
Every 10 years they are at a different address in the old town :-)
