Dennis family of Stepney / Whitechapel
« on: Sunday 05 November 17 20:36 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone know the identity of the two men with the surname DENNIS who are commemorated on the St. George in the East WW1 memorial?

I am trying to research all those listed on the memorial and am stuck with several names including Dennis.

I have cross-ref. with those on CWG and Ancestry but can't find any obvious match.

I presume you are looking for C Dennis and J Dennis?

http://www.stgitehistory.org.uk/media/warmemorial.html

Is there a pattern with the regiments that the others on the memorial were in?

Yes its C and J Dennis that I'm interested in.

The most popular regiment seems to have been the London Regiment (with 9 men serving) but many other regiments are represented incl. RE, KRRC, The Buffs etc.

Around 70% of WW1 service records were lost during the Blitz in WW2;  it could be that their records were lost or form part of the 'burnt records".

Thanks  Nanny Jan.

I agree the records have been lost but I had hoped to identify them via 'Soldiers Died' or the CWG site but there are no obvious matches.  I hope one day to create a website detailing all the men on the St. George's memorial but that's a long way off.

I can't see any family that could be them in 1911, unfortunately it doesn't help that their first names aren't given!
