Hello,
Denton Wakes was when the mills and factories closed for their annual holiday. Extra trains were put on to take families on holiday to Blackpool.
The fair came to town.
There were lots of weddings on the first saturday of wakes.

Denton wakes is still in August but shops and businesses don't close anymore.

Each town in the area had different wakes. Stalybridge wakes were known locally as 'th'umbrella wakes' as it usually rained!
Heather

Thanks to everyone, your input is highly appreciated. Did they have any kind of "manly sports" (boxing, wrestling) at Denton Wakes/Fairs?
