And a Goulding´s New York City Directory for 1876 shows the Grocery store:
Owen Swift, 592 Second Ave

I have followed some of the American papers which say CAROLINE HILL (daughter of Rev. James Clarence Hill) eloped with Thomas Whelan. Certainly Caroline / Catherine might get confused, and there will be various spellings of "Whelan", and the papers will copy each other or use a common source.

Then CATHERINE MURPHY and sister Alice marry respectively James C Whelan (son of Caroline and Thomas above) and Owen Swift.

Then CATHERINE ANN WHELAN, the lady in question, dying in December 1878, is the daughter of James and Catherine above.

I cannot vouch for the Herts inheritance story, and would like to know if anyone can.

In paraphrasing the Boston Newspaper above, I erred in writing "Catherine" as the daughter of the Reverend. It did actually say 'Caroline'.  :-[
