I think you can ask records of a divorce, but it isn't cheap.

https://www.gov.uk/copy-decree-absolute-final-order

The decree absolute/final order will not give details of the circumstances of the divorce it is I believe just a single sheet of paper.

I was thinking more about finding dates e.g if the divorce wasn't finalised until 1951, the first marriage wouldn't have been legal.

No I wasn't after the gorey details Rosie99 I was just curious why the marriage was recorded twice and then two years apart, an annulment because of problems with a divorce certainly seems to be the logical answer, I just wondered if there could be anything else.
Francis Delahunt, Kathleen's first husband remarried in 1947 so there does not seem to be a problem with Kathleens divorce, the problem seems to be with Charles Elphick as his first wife did not remarry until 1953 or maybe later, I think that is the direction I need to be heading - GedB

There is an article in the Lancashire Evening Post, of 1st July 1946, about a Francis Joseph Delahunt, 25, who was fined £10 for dangerous driving and £1 for not having a licence. His address was Manor House Lane, Preston.
Perhaps he was a bit of a wayward character.

Thank you for that David, we knew the family were Preston based and that his parents were living at Manor House Lane around that time so it is really good to be able to pin him down a bit more, I would assume by 1946 he had already parted from his first wife and was ready to head south as he married again in Essex during 1947. You are spot on with the assumption that he may have been a bit of a wayward character, in fact it seemingly ran in the family right back to his serial bigamist great grandfather - GedB
